MOTION DESIGN

New this year, the Motion Design competition is the marathon of the Digital Design Tournament. That is, an 8-hour marathon where four solo competitors sprint from start to finish, side by side and frame by frame, to render their way across the finish line.

Over the course of a single eight-hour round, four individual designers will go head to head as they design a 15-second motion design masterpiece on a theme supplied by Cut&Paste—all in front of a live audience.

In all cities in Digital Design Tournament 2009, the live event will run in the range of 3-4 hours. Competing designers in the Motion Design competition only will therefore get an early start on the day and begin work before doors open. When the event begins, they’ll continue to work on a side stage in full view of the crowd, with much of their work displayed by large-scale projection in real time. At the end of the round, when 8 hours have elapsed, teams will submit their rendered clips and the final work will be played for evaluation by both the judges and the audience.

CONTESTANT SELECTION

  • Entries received during the Call For Competitors period will be reviewed by Cut&Paste.
  • Top entrants will be invited to meet with the local Cut&Paste team at Test Rounds to discuss their work. Test Rounds is a weekend event where 2D and 3D candidates will do a simulation. Motion Design candidates will only meet with the local Cut&Paste team.
  • Four (4) competitors will be selected and announced on the website in advance of the tournament event.

RULES

  • Competition consists of one round, eight hours in duration.
  • Prior to the start of the competition, competitors will be given time to set up their physical and digital workspaces.
  • Tools provided to each competitor are as follows (Unless otherwise stated, the use of additional computer equipment not supplied by Cut&Paste is prohibited.):
  • (workstation) Competitors should bring their own workstations. Due to the length of this competition, and based on format testing, Cut&Paste finds that it is to the designers' advantage to work on machines that they are familiar with and that are preconfigured to their preferences. Local transportation for motion designers and their equipment will be provided. Designers who prefer to use a workstation provided by Cut&Paste have that option.
  • (display) Wacom Cintiq 21 UX pen-based display

  • Competitors are encouraged to bring sound and/or music to be incorporated in their work.
  • Competitors may bring fonts and typefaces not included in the standard software. All such fonts must be provided by the competitor in advance and must be publicly available (free or by purchase). Proprietary and custom fonts are not allowed.
